Tak lama kemudian, kejutan besar ditunjukkan George Russell bersama jet darat Mercedes-nya.
Memacu mobil F1 milik skuad Silver Arrow, Russell mampu menyelesaikan satu lap Sirkuit Internasional Bahrain dalam tempo 55,030 detik.
Russell pun langsung menyodok ke urutan teratas dalam daftar catatan waktu putaran pada FP1.

Performa ciamik Russell ini lalu diikuti pembalap muda Red Bull Racing, Alexander Albon.
Tampil cepat pada 20 menit terakhir FP1, Albon sempat menggeser posisi Russell sebelum akhirnya berada di P3.
Posisi Albon tersebut bertahan sampai akhir sesi FP1.
Adapun status pembalap tercepat pada FP1 berhasil disabet Russell.
